GAZIMAGUSA
Among the massively fortified
places on the shores of the Mediterranean, Gazimagusa takes a high place.
It has always been a
stepping stone between the near east and Europe.
Gazimagusa'a real growth
took place during the Lusignan reiign, when the diverse races of the Near
East settled in the town, and with their cultures and wealth gave a new
impetus to the residents of Gazimagusa.
Gazimagusa was a natural
choice, because by then the town was a chief business centre of the Mediterranean.
It is known that one of the nobles of Gazimagusa was one of the richest
man in the world, for his daughter had more jewels than the King of France.

The inhabitants
lived in extreme ease and luxury. Perheps by building 365 churches they
intended to avoid God's wrath upon them.
The golden sandy beaches
of Gazimagusa are well known throught the world and it is the most important
centre tourism.

GUZELYURT
The Turkish name of Morphou,
'Guzelyurt' means the 'beautiful country' obviously referring
to the green color and fertility
of the area surrounding the town.
Citrus fruit is the most important
produce of the area. Excavations have shown that the first human settlement
in the area goes back to the Neolithic period.
During the Bronze Age, the
nearby copper mines were exploited and the worked copper was exported.
